NYK Welcomes New 14,000 TEU Container Ship to its Fleet

Apr 17, 2016 11:25

In a significant advancement for the maritime industry, Japan Marine United Corp. has officially handed over the NYK Blue Jay, a state-of-the-art 14,000 TEU container ship, to Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK). This milestone delivery occurred shortly after the vessel completed rigorous sea trials on February 22. NYK Blue Jay marks the inaugural unit of a series of 10 vessels commissioned by NYK, specifically designed for operations along the Asia-European trade routes. This innovative series aims to provide competitive operational efficiencies compared to the rising class of ultra-large container ships that can carry around 20,000 TEU. A standout feature of the NYK Blue Jay is its cutting-edge propulsion system, which integrates a compact engine room design that enhances hydrodynamic efficiency throughout the hull. Additionally, the vessel is powered by the latest Wärtsilä Generation X two-stroke diesel engine, notably the 9-cylinder Wärtsilä X82, expertly engineered by Winterthur Gas & Diesel based in Winterthur, Switzerland. This delivery not only highlights NYK's commitment to modernizing its fleet but also emphasizes the importance of advanced technology in the shipping industry.
