Fire Breaks Out on MOL Contribution at Port of Oakland

Feb 16, 2015 10:56

On February 15, 2015, at precisely 5:55 p.m., Oakland firefighters responded to a major fire incident aboard the cargo vessel "MOL Contribution" docked at pier 32 of the Trapac Container Terminal in the Port of Oakland. Arriving promptly at the scene, firefighting crews observed significant smoke billowing from the upper decks of the large container ship. The source of the flames was quickly identified in the third officer’s cabin and the adjoining passageway on the "F" deck. At the time of the firefighters' arrival, 15 dedicated crew members of the ship were already engaged in combating the fire. Equipped with thermal protection gear, respirators, and fire hoses, the crew worked diligently despite most of their colleagues being ashore. Approximately 20 personnel were onboard during the incident. The fire had spread from the initial cabin location into the passageway, resulting in extensive fire and smoke damage on the "F" deck and noticeable smoke damage throughout various sections of the vessel. The bridge area was evacuated as a precautionary measure early in the response. Accessing the fire proved challenging; however, the Oakland Fire Department successfully managed to extinguish the blaze within roughly 30 minutes. Preliminary assessments suggested that the fire likely stemmed from an electrical issue, possibly caused by overheating equipment. While the MOL Contribution was originally en route to Hong Kong, it is now expected to remain at the Port of Oakland for an extended period as crews initiate repairs on the officer’s sleeping quarters and address the overall damage. The U.S. Coast Guard has announced it will conduct a subsequent investigation to ascertain the vessel's safety for travel, while the Oakland Fire Department continues to probe into the origins of the fire.
