Heroic Rescue by NYK Eagle Saves Six Lives at Sea
On June 20, 2019, the NYK Eagle played a pivotal role in a dramatic rescue operation, collaborating with the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), and regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centers. Positioned as the nearest vessel to a distressed coastal craft in the Eastern Gulf of Aden, the NYK Eagle responded swiftly to a distress signal, coming to the aid of six crew members from a sinking vessel. Demonstrating exceptional seamanship, the crew of the container ship executed a careful rescue operation, successfully bringing all six castaways onboard. In addition to this effort, two other crew members were airlifted to safety by a Japan Navy helicopter, subsequently transported to Japan for further assistance. After disembarking the rescued individuals in Djibouti on June 22, the NYK Eagle resumed its journey, making its way from Yantian to Rotterdam.
