Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Expands Fleet with Five New 8,600 TEU Ships for Europe Route
Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, commonly known as ‘K’ Line, is set to enhance its operational capabilities on the Asia-Europe trade route by introducing five new large container vessels this year. As reported by Nikkei, these 8,600 TEU containerships are being constructed by IHI Marine United, marking a significant advancement in the company's fleet. The first vessel, named Honolulu Bridge, measures an impressive 335 meters in length and was successfully delivered in late January. The remaining four vessels are slated for completion later in the year. The purchase of these vessels occurred back in 2008, prior to the financial turmoil instigated by Lehman Brothers, leading to a higher cost than the current market rates. A company representative expressed that these 8,600-TEU ships will serve as the standard model for K Line's European services, aimed at optimizing transport capacity while enhancing operational efficiency and market competitiveness. Following the introduction of these five new ships, K Line will boast a total of 13 vessels of this model by year’s end. In a strategic move, the company is also planning to phase out certain short-term charters, thereby maintaining a fleet size of around 80 vessels overall. As a prominent player in the shipping industry, K Line is part of the CKYH Green Alliance alongside China Ocean Shipping (Group) Co (Cosco) and Hanjin Shipping from South Korea. Additionally, the company is collaborating with Taiwan’s Evergreen Marine to launch an integrated European service starting in April.
