Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Tests Innovative Windshield Technology on MOL Marvel

Sep 04, 2015 12:54

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) is pioneering a groundbreaking 'windshield' technology on its container ship, the MOL MARVEL, aimed at enhancing aerodynamic efficiency to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This cutting-edge device, recently installed at the bow of the vessel, is currently undergoing a series of demonstration tests to validate its potential in lowering carbon outputs. In collaboration with MOL Techno-Trade, Ouchi Ocean Consultant, Akishima Laboratory (Mitsui Zosen) Inc., and the University of Tokyo, MOL developed this innovative solution to tackle the growing challenges posed by wind resistance on modern containerships. The initiative is supported by ClassNK’s “Joint R&D for Industry Program,” which fosters comprehensive research efforts in partnership with various sectors, including industry, government, and academia. MOL emphasizes that the increase in container height on contemporary ships has significantly elevated wind resistance, prompting the need for effective and economical solutions. The research into the new windshield began with in-depth wind tunnel studies focused on the aerodynamics of the vessel's bow, culminating in a unique horseshoe-shaped design that encloses the leading edge of the stacked containers for optimal wind deflection. In addition to its innovative design, the windshield is robust enough to comply with ClassNK's regulations regarding wave impact pressure. The strategic placement of containers along the vessel's sides, positioned behind the windshield at an angle, contributes to a more streamlined profile, further diminishing wind resistance. This advancement underscores MOL's commitment to enhancing the sustainability of maritime operations while addressing essential environmental concerns.
