Eleven Shipping Containers Tumble into Oakland's Outer Harbor
In a notable incident at the Port of Oakland's Outer Harbor, 11 empty shipping containers from the 'MOL Maxim' fell into the waters on September 21, 2017. The mishap occurred in the vicinity of berths 25 and 26, close to the Outer Harbor Channel and the Bridge Toll Plaza. The container ship had docked in the Middle Harbor the previous night when the Coast Guard received a report at 2:46 p.m. As a result of the incident, 10 of the containers sank, scattered across an area where the water depth reaches up to 50 feet. Divers were subsequently assigned to locate the submerged containers, while a crane was scheduled to arrive around noon to assist with the removal operation. This salvage process may take the entire day, with the objective of retrieving all 11 containers back onto the dock. Authorities including the Coast Guard and the Bar Pilots Association have been informed to help manage vessel traffic in the area and ensure safety. The cause of the container fall remains unclear, prompting the Coast Guard to initiate an investigation into the matter. However, officials at the Port of Oakland assured that they do not expect any disruption to regular shipping activities.
