NYK Olympus Faces Challenges on Departure from Hamburg

Jul 06, 2015 10:48

On the afternoon of July 4, the container ship NYK Olympus made its bid to depart from Hamburg, expertly assisted by tugs ZP Bulldog and ZP Boxer as she maneuvered from the Finkenwerder pilings. After navigating to Parkhafen and turning around, the tugs unmoored, and it appeared that NYK Olympus was on her way out of the bustling port. However, around 3 p.m., the vessel encountered another delay upon arrival at the Airbus site, inadvertently blocking access for the inbound tanker Amorina and the outbound container ship Voronezh. The agile tugs quickly returned to offer assistance, helping NYK Olympus re-berth in Finkenwerder. Finally, after further delays, the boxship successfully set sail from Hamburg at 6:40 p.m., heading towards Le Havre.

NYK Olympus Container Ship Encounters Engine Blackout on Elbe River

Jul 04, 2015 10:42

On July 3, 2015, at approximately 9 p.m., the container vessel NYK Olympus experienced a critical engine failure due to a ruptured fuel line shortly after departing the Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) in Hamburg. This unfortunate incident occurred on the Elbe River, prompting the ship to perform an emergency anchoring at buoy 116 near Grünendeich. As the NYK Olympus turned 180 degrees to stabilize, it impeded the passage of the cruise liner MSC Splendida, which had also recently departed from Hamburg. The MSC Splendida was required to halt its journey off the Lühe berth until the NYK Olympus successfully completed its maneuver. To assist, tugboats ZP Bulldog and SD Dolphin were dispatched to tow the NYK Olympus, which finally secured at the Finkenwerder pilings by 11:30 p.m. For further details, you can view the German report featuring photos and videos here: [Tageblatt Article](http://www.tageblatt.de/lokales/aktuelle-meldungen_artikel,-Containerschiff-NYK-Olympus-muss-vor-Gruenendeich-notankern-_arid,1142873.html) and [YouTube Coverage](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRzYwjHn0Dc).
