Impact of ONE Partnership Hits Japan's Leading Shipowners in H1 FY2018

Oct 31, 2018 12:34

In the first half of FY2018, the joint venture Ocean Network Express (ONE) significantly impacted Japan's foremost shipping companies, leading both NYK and K Line to report financial losses. NYK revealed a recurring loss of JPY 9.03 billion for the six-month period ending on September 30, 2018, a stark contrast to the JPY 22 billion profit recorded during the same timeframe in the previous year. The financial report highlighted two struggling business segments: container shipping, which recorded a loss of JPY 18.8 billion, and air cargo, suffering a JPY 7.9 billion deficit. The incorporation of ONE, formed in partnership with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and K Line starting April 1, 2018, did not go as smoothly as anticipated. NYK noted that the initiation of this cooperative effort led to unforeseen disruptions in service, resulting in diminished loading volumes and reduced slot utilization. These challenges contributed directly to the financial losses. Additionally, NYK incurred substantial one-time expenses primarily due to the termination of its container shipping operations in the first quarter. This series of setbacks paints a challenging picture for Japan's leading shipowners navigating a difficult maritime landscape.

ONE Stork: Ocean Network Express Welcomes Its First 14,000 TEU Magenta Containership

Jun 13, 2018 12:10

Ocean Network Express (ONE) proudly announced the delivery of its inaugural magenta-hued containership, the ONE Stork, marking a significant addition to its fleet. This state-of-the-art vessel, with a capacity of 14,000 TEU, was delivered at the Kure Shipyard operated by Japan Marine United Corporation. The ONE Stork, which is sublet-owned by Nippon Yusen Kaisha, features an innovative design boasting 18 rows by 11 tiers in its hold and an impressive 20 rows by 9 tiers on deck. This unique hull configuration optimizes cargo-loading efficiency by minimizing engine-room space. Furthermore, the ship incorporates a dual system in its main engine, enabling it to operate at high and low output ranges. This flexibility enhances operational performance while significantly lowering fuel consumption rates and reducing carbon dioxide emissions. ONE Stork is set to make her debut in THE Alliance’s EC4 service, connecting Asia to the North America East Coast. The ship's port rotation includes key locations such as Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Yantian, Cai Mep, Singapore, New York, Norfolk, Savannah, Charleston, and back to Singapore. This strategic deployment underscores ONE's commitment to sustainability while enhancing global shipping routes.
