Stranded Cargo Ship 'Onego Rio' Successfully Towed to Ireland
The 'Onego Rio', a distressed cargo ship, was expertly towed over 600 miles from Canadian waters to the shores of Ireland by Atlantic Towing and Salvage. The vessel, which had departed Panama City on August 4, was en route to Rosyth with an expected arrival on August 18. However, the situation took a turn on August 16 when it suffered a complete loss of engine power, causing it to drift helplessly approximately 600 miles off the south-west coast of Ireland. In response to the emergency, Atlantic Towing deployed the 'Ocean Challenger' on August 16, which reached the 'Onego Rio' on August 19. Upon their arrival, they were joined by a second tug, the 'Ocean Bank', positioned to assist and remain on standby during subsequent repairs. The 'Onego Rio' successfully dropped anchor off Bere Island in West Cork on the afternoon of August 24, 2019, concluding its tumultuous tow. The anchoring process was diligently overseen by an Irish Coast Guard helicopter as assessments of the ships' damages and required repairs were undertaken. On September 2, the 'Onego Rio' began its journey to Rotterdam for critical repairs, arriving at the Sea Port in Dordrecht on September 6 around 3:30 p.m. The ship left the port on November 20 at 4:30 a.m., making its way towards Rosyth, where it finally docked on November 22 at 8:30 a.m. This incident highlights the longstanding resilience and expertise of maritime rescue operations.
