What Crew Members Say About Onix

On January 16, 2011, the bulk carrier 'Onix', IMO number 8943478, collided with the vessel 'Amur 2505' in the Azov Sea, specifically located at coordinates 46°51'08" N and 037°33'44" E. The encounter resulted in significant damage to the 'Onix', which sustained a breach in ballast tanks No. 7 and 8, as well as a 50 cm hole in its fuel tank containing 20 metric tons of diesel. Fortunately, no environmental spill was reported, possibly due to the nighttime conditions during the incident. Additionally, the superstructure and the wheelhouse of the 'Onix' were affected, causing the ship to list. Following this, the crew managed to take on ballast in the starboard tanks, allowing the vessel to regain an even keel. While the main engine was shut down, the generator continued to operate. The 'Amur 2505' experienced minor damage to its bow area. At approximately 4 p.m., the tug m/v 'Fobos' commenced towing the 'Onix' toward Kerch port, where the 'Amur 2505' was also en route for repairs. Both vessels arrived at Kerch at 10 a.m. Moscow time on January 17.
