Daring Rescue: Container Ship Averted from Colliding with Migrant Boat
On January 21, 2019, a dramatic incident unfolded in the Strait of Gibraltar when a helicopter from the Civil Guard's Air Service, part of Operation Indalo coordinated by the European Agency FRONTEX, intervened just in time to prevent the 'Siroja Tiga' container ship from colliding with a sinking vessel carrying 11 sub-Saharan migrants. The vessel was located approximately 11 miles south of Camarinal Point, in perilous conditions. The Civil Guard helicopter, upon spotting the distressed migrant boat, swiftly performed an approach maneuver to assess the situation. They observed the vessel was half-submerged, with migrants desperately waving their arms for assistance. In response, the Central Operative of the Civil Guard deployed a patrol boat from their Maritime Service and promptly alerted Maritime Rescue. While hovering over the distressed boat, the helicopter crew noticed that the container ship was advancing towards them from the southwest on a collision course. Despite repeated attempts to communicate with the cargo ship, there was no response. Recognizing the immediate danger of a collision, the helicopter circled closely to signal the crew of the approaching ship. Using light signals, they successfully urged the container ship to adjust its course to the left, allowing it to narrowly avoid the migrant boat. Following the helicopter's intervention, the migrants were safely rescued by the Maritime Service of the Civil Guard, alongside assistance from Maritime Rescue, and were subsequently transported to Algeciras. The operation, highlighted by various French news outlets, was documented with striking footage showcasing the urgency and coordination required to avert a potential tragedy.
