The OOCL Charleston cargo vessel docked in Hong Kong on Saturday, arriving from its last port of call with a controversial load of mining waste. In a decisive response from local authorities, the shipping company has agreed to return 123 containers of hazardous materials back to Romania, where they originated. The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) of Hong Kong is currently assessing the toxicity of the cargo and announced on Wednesday that it received confirmation from the carrier about the impending return of the potentially toxic waste to the Romanian port of Constanța. Although a precise sailing schedule has yet to be established, a spokeswoman from the EPD stated, “We are actively working with the shipping company to finalize the timeline for the return.” The urgency is underscored by the fact that the containers are not permitted to leave the cargo terminal until they are retraced to their point of origin. This situation arose after Malaysian authorities, prompted by internal reports, blocked the unloading of eight containers of the hazardous shipment at Port Klang last month, leading to the vessel's return to Kwai Chung cargo terminal in Hong Kong.
