Delivery of NYK HYPERION Marks Milestone for Samsung Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries

Oct 24, 2013 07:44

In a significant achievement for the maritime industry, Samsung Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries has officially delivered the impressive 13,208 TEU vessel, NYK HYPERION. This ship is the eighth unit in a series of ten neo-panamax vessels ordered by OOCL back in March 2011. Following closely in the footsteps of OOCL BANGKOK, which was delivered in September, NYK HYPERION continues the legacy of advanced maritime engineering. Out of the ten ships, six will operate under OOCL's flag, while four will be chartered to Japanese shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kaisha. Set to become a key player in the G6 Alliance's Far East to Europe service, designated as 'Loop 7', NYK HYPERION is poised to replace the older 10,660 TEU APL YANGSHAN vessel. The NYK HYPERION and its sister ships boast impressive dimensions, measuring 366.47 meters in length and 48.20 meters in width, accommodating 19 rows of containers. These vessels are equipped with a MAN B&W 12S90ME-C9.2 main engine, which has been electronically down-rated to 54,200 kW, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency. Additionally, two more ships from this series are expected to launch in the first quarter of 2014, further enhancing the capabilities of the fleet.

Designed to enhance the company’s operations, the NYK Hyperion will play a vital role in the Asia-Europe trade route, operating on the Loop 7 service. Her extensive itinerary includes key ports such as Qingdao, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Yantian, Singapore, Salalah, and several European destinations including Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Southampton—ensuring a comprehensive 77-day round trip for efficient maritime logistics.
