Collision Incident Involving OOCL St. Lawrence and Brigitte-Z 19 Trawler
On the evening of January 31, 2025, the container vessel 'OOCL St. Lawrence' collided with the fishing trawler 'Brigitte-Z 19' (IMO: 9898668) near Nieuwpoort, Belgium (Lat. 51.3680 Lng. 2.5994). The 'OOCL St. Lawrence', which was cruising at 20 knots toward Antwerp, encountered the trawler just as it turned at the end of its fishing line. Investigations are ongoing to determine the precise cause of the incident, as both vessels appeared to have turned toward one another before the collision occurred. The lookout on the fishing boat quickly raised the alarm and attempted to avoid impact by steering hard starboard. However, the container ship grazed the trawler's port side, causing significant damage. The fishing vessel listed dramatically, and its port side boom became bent against the aft mast, while notable dents were observed on the foreship, particularly around the fish hold frames. After confirming safety aboard the 'Brigitte-Z 19', the 'OOCL St. Lawrence' proceeded to its destination port, arriving on February 1. A few hours later, the trawler also made its way back to port. French inspectors conducted oil leak checks near Boulogne-sur-Mer during its journey. On the afternoon of February 1, the 'Brigitte-Z 19' entered the port of Ostend for unloading. The vessel's builder, Bema, was engaged by owner Thysebaerdt to expedite repairs for the trawler, ensuring it would be ready for fishing once authorized by the Maritime Inspectorate. As of February 10, the 'Brigitte-Z 19' remained docked in port awaiting repairs.
