Rescue at Sea: Oosterschelde Aids Stranded Sailor in Atlantic

On February 6, 2016, at 4:10 AM, the historic vessel 'Oosterschelde' successfully rescued an Italian sailor stranded in the Atlantic Ocean. The sailor, whose yacht 'Tarabaralla' had suffered severe damage, was found dismasted and taking on water after losing communication with MRCC Rome. Captain Maarten de Jong of 'Oosterschelde' received the initial distress signal from the sailor on February 5 at 6 PM, while positioned approximately 90 nautical miles away. Undeterred, Captain de Jong navigated toward the distressed yacht, attempting contact via satellite phone and finally reaching the sailor at 2:45 AM on February 6. Unfortunately, the sailor had to abandon 'Tarabaralla' due to the critical condition of the vessel. The 'Oosterschelde' was en route to Martinique, with an expected arrival date of February 14, ensuring the rescued sailor would be safely delivered to shore.
