On January 13, 2012, a dramatic rescue unfolded when the U.S. Coast Guard was alerted to a medical emergency aboard the vessel 'Orange Wave,' located east of Elizabeth City. A 55-year-old man required urgent medical attention, prompting the crew of the vessel to contact the Coast Guard for assistance. Responding swiftly, crew members from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City were dispatched aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, with support from an HC-130 Hercules aircraft to maintain communication during the operation. As the rescue crew approached, they were met with turbulent weather conditions, including winds gusting between 42 to 45 knots and towering swells reaching 22 to 26 feet. In order to execute the medevac safely, the helicopter crew had to perform a hoist maneuver from a height of 168 feet, carefully navigating the challenging seas and the vessel's impressive superstructure. Despite the daunting conditions, the Coast Guard successfully hoisted the man aboard the helicopter. He was then promptly transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for further medical care.
