Crane Recovery Underway for 'Orion 1' at Rostock Port
Significant progress has been made regarding the recovery and repair of the crane that collapsed aboard the 'Orion 1' during lifting trials on May 2. Currently, work is being carried out at Liebherr's facilities in Rostock, where both the auxiliary jib and jib head have been successfully moved for repair. The project commenced in September, marking the beginning of intensive efforts to restore the crane to operational status. The need for new steel structures has arisen, as the 142-meter-long crane jib and parts of the A-frame are being fabricated from scratch. The dismantling of the HLC 295000 crane is proceeding smoothly at berth 25, with quayside recovery operations ongoing at the Port of Rostock. As of November 11, the Solutions, Projects & Engineering team at SARENS successfully retrieved the jib components, a critical milestone in the salvage operation. Looking ahead, the next steps involve relocating the 'Orion 1' to berth 15 within the port for further disassembly of the pivot piece and A-frame. The TCC 78000 crane, stationed permanently at the Port of Rostock, will assist in recovering these substantial components, notably the very crane that helped assemble the HLC 295000 onboard. It is anticipated that recovery work will wrap up by the close of 2020, with repairs set to conclude throughout 2021. At this stage, it remains unclear whether the 'Orion 1' will reenter service immediately following the crane's restoration. Prior to the incident, the installation vessel was on track for delivery to DEME in the latter half of that month, followed by mobilization for the Moray East offshore wind farm shortly after.
Heavy-Lift Crane Misfortune: 12 Injured in Major Incident on 'Orion I'
On May 2, 2020, a catastrophic incident occurred aboard the 'Orion I' in Rostock when a Liebherr heavy-lift crane unexpectedly collapsed. The vessel was preparing for its upcoming engagement with the Moray East Offshore Wind Farm in Scottish waters, set to commence operations in just two weeks following crucial final tests in Rostock. The crane's collapse resulted in significant damage to the ship and left 12 individuals injured. This heavy-lift crane was originally constructed in China before being outfitted with the vessel at the Liebherr facility in Rostock.
