Major Fire Erupts on Ship Undergoes Repairs in Farmsun
Early in the morning on November 26, 2025, a significant blaze ignited aboard the 'Ostborg', which was undergoing maintenance at a shipyard located on Visserijweg in Farmsun. The fire sparked in the vessel's bow, where approximately three tons of rope, containing plastic elements, were stored. The intense heat from the flames made the situation challenging for firefighters, leading authorities to classify it as a major fire incident. Fortunately, there was no threat to the nearby areas. Firefighting teams anticipated several hours of work to fully extinguish the fire, which is believed to have originated during welding operations at the front of the ship. Bulk Carrier Collision in Gulf of Finland
On February 25, 2018, a maritime incident unfolded in the Gulf of Finland when the bulk carrier 'Ourania,' on its way from St. Petersburg to Ashdod, collided with the 'Ostborg,' which was en route from Lomonosov to Tallinn. The collision occurred south of the Porvoo Kalbådagrund lighthouse, and the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard was alerted at 10 a.m. Fortunately, the 'Ourania' only sustained a breach in its bow above the waterline, allowing it to continue its voyage without requiring external help. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported from this accident. It is believed that ice conditions contributed to a reduction in the speed of the 'Ostborg,' resulting in the 'Ourania' striking the other vessel’s stern. Importantly, both ships were transporting non-hazardous cargo, and there was no reported environmental impact from the incident. A Coast Guard Dornier aircraft was dispatched to monitor the situation, while the vessel 'Uisko' was also sent to the area. Following the collision, the 'Ostborg' proceeded to Tallinn, eventually dropping anchor at 4:30 p.m. the same day. Wagenborg Acquires Ostgard and Other Vessels from Bore Ahead of December Delivery
In a strategic move to enhance its operations, the Finnish maritime company Bore announced on Tuesday its decision to divest its general cargoship fleet, aiming to concentrate on its roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) business segment. Bore is selling off a total of six vessels as part of its contract of affreightment (CoA) business, which has been beleaguered by years of excessive supply and declining profitability. With a relatively small fleet, Bore has struggled to compete with larger entities in the challenging general cargo market. The transaction includes the acquisition of the 3,700-dwt Nordgard (IMO: 9198431), built in 1999, along with the 3,800-dwt vessels Sydgard (IMO: 9223674) and Westgard (IMO: 9223686), both launched in 2000, and the 3,800-dwt Ostgard (IMO: 9223662) constructed in 2001. These vessels are set to be handed over to Wagenborg by the end of December. In conjunction with the fleet's downsizing, Bore anticipates layoffs, with as many as 19 of the 31 shore employees facing redundancy. Notably, Nordkalk, a limestone shipping company, has reached a three-year agreement with Wagenborg to manage cargo transport until 2017, ensuring a smooth transition following the acquisition.
Emergency Tug Saves Disabled Cargo Ship Off Belle Isle Coast
On June 22, 2013, at 11:45 a.m., the cargo vessel 'Ostgard' reported a technical malfunction with its main engine to the semaphore at Belle Isle. The ship, which was transporting timber and headed for Rochefort, found itself adrift approximately 13 miles south of Belle Isle and around 40 nautical miles from Saint-Nazaire, listing southeast amidst high swells. Simultaneously, the emergency tug 'Abeille Bourbon' was en route from Brest to another anchorage when it received orders to adjust its course southward to assist the 'Ostgard.' Initially, at 1 p.m., the crew of the 'Ostgard' believed they had identified the cause of the engine failure; however, by 4:35 p.m., the captain realized they required external support. A contract for towing was officially signed by the vessel's owner at 8:30 p.m. Soon after, at 1:10 a.m. on June 23, the 'Abeille Bourbon' took the 'Ostgard' into tow, setting a course for Saint-Nazaire. As the tugboat returned to Brest at 2:00 a.m., the situation took an unexpected turn; the 'Ostgard' broke loose around 4:30 a.m. While the 'Abeille Bourbon' was 37 nautical miles north of the disabled ship, it quickly redirected back to re-establish the connection. By 6:39 a.m., the tug was back on the scene, with the 'Ostgard' located 15 miles west of Noirmoutier. Once a new towing line was secured, the 'Abeille Bourbon' proceeded to Saint-Nazaire, successfully docking at approximately 8:00 a.m. on June 24. Thanks to the swift response from the emergency services, the 'Ostgard' was safely guided back to port.
