164 Migrants Arrive at Crotone Port After Four-Day Journey
On April 19, 2023, the port of Crotone welcomed 164 migrants who completed a challenging four-day journey aboard a luxury yacht from Imzir to the shores of Calabria. This route mirrors that of a tragic shipwreck on February 26, which claimed the lives of 94 individuals just off Steccato beach in Cutro. The migrants were detected by a Frontex aircraft on April 18, approximately 100 miles southeast of the Calabrian coast. At 9 a.m., the Italian Coast Guard vessel 'CP 322' launched a rescue operation, accompanied by the 'Bojador,' a patrol boat from the Portuguese National Republican Guard, both of which are actively involved in the Frontex mission in the Ionian Sea. The migrants began disembarking at around 7 a.m., with the first group of 66 arriving on the Italian patrol boat, followed by another 98 from the Portuguese vessel. The individuals hailing from Afghanistan, Syria, Bangladesh, Iraq, Egypt, Kuwait, Palestine, and Myanmar included 50 minors, 32 of whom were unaccompanied, along with 18 women, one of whom was pregnant and required urgent medical attention.
