On October 3, 2014, at 3:15 AM, the tanker Pacific Quartz struck the bottom of Durban harbour. To maintain stability, the vessel was ballasted. Two pilots were onboard, diligently updating port control on the situation and assisting the master with local navigational conditions. While navigating towards Island View eight amid five to six metre swells and wind speeds ranging from eight to ten knots, the Pacific Quartz incurred damage to its starboard ballast tank, located just before the accommodation quarters, which resulted in water intrusion. Fortunately, all cargo tanks remained unaffected, and the crew was reported safe.
