Cocaine Discovery Aboard Pacific Reefer Raises Concerns in Hamburg
On September 28, 2010, authorities made a startling discovery of eight kilograms of cocaine aboard the cargo ship 'Pacific Reefer' at Oswald Quay in Hamburg. Prior to this incident, the Russian crew had reported the finding of the illicit drugs before navigating the Panama Canal on September 14. The vessel had recently loaded a shipment of bananas in Puerto Bolivar, Ecuador, destined for Hamburg, with an additional stop planned in Guayaquil, Ecuador before making its way to Europe. Due to the bananas obstructing access to the concealed drug packages, it was necessary for the entirety of the cargo to be unloaded. Consequently, the hatch 2 was sealed by maritime authorities in Marin, the ship's first port of call in Europe. Following its journey, the 'Pacific Reefer' docked in Zeebrugge before arriving in Hamburg on September 28 at 1 p.m. Inspectors monitored the unloading process closely, and by 10 p.m., they uncovered six packages discreetly hidden on deck C. Initial investigations suggest that the drugs may have been stashed by dock workers in Puerto Bolivar, intended for distribution in Hamburg.
