Search and Rescue: One Missing, Two Injured Following Overboard Incident

Jun 17, 2014 11:07

On the night of June 15, 2014, around 11 p.m., the NSRI East London volunteer sea rescue team was put on high alert when the Transnet National Ports Authority reported that the 'Alpine Amalia,' a vessel navigating from Singapore to Angola, was in search of a missing 47-year-old Filipino crew member who had been swept overboard amid inclement weather conditions near Port Alfred. Furthermore, it was reported that two other crew members suffered injuries from falls, thought to have occurred during the chaotic circumstances. In response to the emergency, the NSRI East London and the Eastern Cape Government Health EMS were immediately mobilized. The 'Alpine Amalia' initiated a search operation for the missing crewman, and once their efforts reached a standstill, they planned to proceed to East London's Port for the medical evacuation of the injured. By June 16 at 6 p.m., the NSRI East London crew launched their lifeboat named 'Spirit of Lotto,' which included an EMS rescue paramedic from NSRI and personnel from Dynamic ambulance services. An ambulance was also positioned at the sea rescue base for immediate support. They successfully met the vessel approximately five nautical miles off East London, facing 24-knot westerly winds and a significant swell of 3.5 meters. Upon boarding the 'Alpine Amalia,' the rescue team administered emergency care to the Chief Officer, who had sustained a serious back injury, and an Able Seaman who had multiple injuries, including a dislocated wrist, a dislocated shoulder, and a knee injury. Both men were stabilized medically and prepared for transfer to the rescue boat using Stokes Basket Stretchers, with paramedics continuing to provide care during the journey to shore. Once ashore, the injured crew members were transported to the hospital by Dynamic ambulance. The Chief Officer was reported to be in serious but stable condition, while the Able Seaman was deemed stable. The South African Police Services have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crew member's disappearance. The casualty evacuation was completed around 10 p.m., marking the conclusion of a complex and challenging operation.
