Hekla Freighter Overcomes Engine Failure on Voyage from Klaipeda to Cork
On July 9, 2018, the cargo freighter 'Hekla', with a dedicated crew of eight, encountered an engine failure while navigating through the waters en route from Klaipeda to Cork. The vessel, carrying a substantial load of 3,300 tonnes of fertilizer along with 56.5 tonnes of marine gas oil (MGO), experienced the mechanical issue at coordinates 51°08'15" N, 01°34'24.6" E. Swift troubleshooting allowed the crew to address the malfunction within just 30 minutes, enabling the 'Hekla' to promptly resume its journey towards Cork without major delays.
Container Ship Hekla Grounded in Kiel Canal, Traffic Disrupted
In a notable incident on July 2, 2016, at 3:30 a.m., the cargo vessel 'Hekla' ran aground on the Kiel Canal embankment near Sehestedt, close to the Steinwehr wharf while making its way from Gdansk to Bremen. This unfortunate grounding momentarily halted shipping traffic along the canal. However, a solution was soon in place, as traffic control in Brunsbüttel authorized one-way passage between the stretches of Rade and Königsförde. To assist the stranded vessel, the tug 'Kiel' was deployed from Kiel, successfully managing to pull the 'Hekla' back into the navigable fairway by 7 a.m. Following this, the tug escorted the cargo ship to the communal port in Rendsburg, where it docked at 7:50 a.m. After the water police from Kiel boarded the vessel for an inspection, divers were called in for a thorough hull survey. By 2 p.m., the 'Hekla' received clearance to resume its voyage, with an estimated time of arrival in Bremen set for 10 p.m. on July 2.
