On October 27, 2015, the cargo ship 'Tabea', while navigating its route to New York, made an unscheduled halt in Bermuda due to an urgent medical situation involving a crew member. At 1:02 AM, the Rescue Coordination Center (RCC) Bermuda was alerted by the United States Coast Guard District 5, based in Norfolk, Virginia, regarding the incident. The vessel was approximately 86 miles west of Bermuda and had been traveling from Pecem to New York when the crew member, a 48-year-old Philippine national, sustained a serious facial injury requiring immediate medical care. Coordinated efforts began for the emergency transfer of the injured crew member. The plan involved utilizing the Pilot Boat 'St. David' to facilitate the medevac operation at a designated Deep Draught Position off St. George's Harbour. By 6:30 AM, the 'Tabea' reached the specified location, allowing for a successful transfer to the Pilot/Rescue Boat 'St. David'. Following the transfer, the injured individual was swiftly transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) for the necessary medical treatment.
