Container Ship Resumes Journey After Collision at Yangon Port
In a recent development, the Singapore-flagged container vessel Panja Bhum has been permitted to depart from Yangon port following a collision with the sand carrier Zwe Myint Myat Tun 3. The incident occurred on April 26 near the Ahlone dockyard, where heavy rain led to compromised visibility, resulting in the unexpected crash. The collision was severe enough to split the sand carrier into two sections; the front part sunk instantly, while the rear portion drifted and subsequently sank near Pansodan jetty. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries from the accident. On May 1, the Myanmar shipping authorities granted clearance for Panja Bhum to continue its voyage to Singapore after reaching a mutual agreement between the ship's owners and the appropriate regulatory bodies. In the meantime, a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is currently being conducted by several divisions within the Department of Marine Administration (DMA), including the Myanmar Maritime Safety, Security and Environmental Protection Division, the Marine Engineering Division, and the Legal and Technical Standards Division. The findings of this inquiry are expected to be available within two weeks.
