New Shipping Route Unveiled: OPDR and X-Press Feeders Connect Gothenburg with Spain and the UK

Dec 05, 2014 08:59

In an exciting development for maritime logistics, German shipping line OPDR, in partnership with X-Press Feeders, has launched a new route from the Port of Gothenburg. According to their official press release, the inaugural call is set for December 5, marking OPDR's debut at the APM Terminals Container Terminal. This collaborative effort introduces a weekly freight service linking Sweden with the United Kingdom and Spain. Martin Magnusson, representing Aseco, OPDR's agent, emphasized the company's strong belief in the Scandinavian market. He stated, "By working with X-Press Feeders, OPDR is committing to a weekly presence at the Port of Gothenburg, which connects well with our extensive network covering the Iberian Peninsula, Canary Islands, and Morocco." While X-Press Feeders already frequents the Port of Gothenburg, OPDR's involvement is a first for this crucial shipping hub. The new service promises to expedite imports of fruit, food products, wine, and ceramics, while exports will feature steel, paper, and sawn timber. Magnus Kårestedt, Chief Executive of the Port of Gothenburg, expressed satisfaction with this new route, highlighting the identified market potential between Sweden and Spain: "The partnership between OPDR and X-Press Feeders underscores Gothenburg’s growing role as a pivotal freight hub, facilitating vital commercial exchanges between the two nations." Each year, approximately 2.3 million tonnes of freight are transported between Spain and Sweden, with sea transport accounting for about half of this volume. The Port of Gothenburg has been actively cooperating with the Port of Bilbao to transition more freight from road to maritime transport. The newly established route entails connections from Gothenburg to Rotterdam, Bilbao, Tilbury, and back, with transit times of six days to Bilbao and seven days back to Gothenburg. Vessels operating on this route, the Pantonio and WMS Groningen, each boast a capacity of around 700 containers.
