Dramatic Maritime Collision Near Karachi Port

Jun 02, 2026 11:54

On the evening of May 28, 2026, a serious maritime incident unfolded off the coast of Karachi as the cable layer 'Niwa' (IMO: 8819029) collided with the vessel 'Papu'. The collision occurred around 8 p.m. near the anchorage area, just outside the Fairway Buoy. The 'Niwa', which had set sail from Salalah, was making its approach to the bustling Karachi port, while the 'Papu' was en route to Jeddah after departing from port. The impact resulted in a significant hull breach at the bow of the 'Niwa', severely deforming its structure and causing extensive damage. Meanwhile, the 'Papu' reportedly lost at least one container during the ordeal, with the possibility of more being jettisoned overboard. In response to the incident, the Karachi Port Trust swiftly deployed several tugs: 'MT Mithadar', 'MT Kharadar', 'MT Lyari', and 'MT Keamari' to assist the damaged cable layer. Following safety protocols, the 'Niwa' was escorted to a secure berth in Karachi, while the 'Papu' was directed to an anchorage location, where it remained stationary at coordinates 24° 38' N 066° 55' E as of June 2. Preliminary findings suggest potential negligence on the part of the captains of both vessels. The rescue operation, which concluded around midnight, was supervised by Deputy Conservator Captain Abrar Arif, Harbour Master Captain Babar Salim, and Dock Master Captain Hamid Khan Jadoon. Notably, port operations continued seamlessly amidst the emergency response. An investigation has been launched by both the Mercantile Marine Department and the Karachi Port Trust to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and evaluate the damage incurred. Insurance representatives are expected to join the inquiry to assess liability. It is pertinent to note that the 'Papu', originally named 'Main Trader' and built by HDW Shipyard in Kiel in 2008, was previously flagged by Chinese officials in November 2025 for 17 deficiencies during a Port State inspection, including concerns regarding its auxiliary engine and steering gear.

Container Ship 'Papu' Rescued After Adrift Incident in South China Sea

On November 10, 2025, the container vessel 'Papu' found itself adrift in the South China Sea, while navigating off the Guangdong coast. The ship, which was on its way from Nava Sheva to Qingdao, encountered a critical failure that rendered it disabled. The Guangdong Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) reported that the ship lost control at coordinates 22°54′58″N, 117°42′30″E, in provincial waters close to the Taiwan Strait. Prior to the incident, the 'Papu' had transmitted its last AIS signal on the morning of November 9, indicating its status as 'stopped.' In response, the Guangdong MSA urged nearby vessels to maintain vigilance and avoid the vicinity for safety. Fortunately, the situation was resolved when the 'Papu' was successfully towed to Guishan Anchorage, where it was safely moored at coordinates 22°08'N, 113°46'E on November 16.
