Corsica Linea's Pascal Paoli Goes Emission-Free in Marseille with ABB Technology
In a significant advancement towards sustainability, ABB has announced that three ferries operated by Corsica Linea, including the Pascal Paoli, will soon enjoy emissions-free stays at the Port of Marseille, France. Thanks to ABB's innovative shore connection technology, these ferries will no longer rely on diesel-powered auxiliary engines while docked. Instead, the vessels—Paglia Orba, Jean Nicoli, and Pascal Paoli—will harness local electric power. Each ferry is undergoing modifications to integrate ABB’s Dynacomp power compensation solution, which effectively steps down grid electricity to 11KV, ensuring that the ships’ power requirements are met during their time at port. Ludovic Amouroux, Project Manager at Corsica Linea, highlighted the impact of this technology, stating, "ABB shore connection technology enables the type of emissions-free ship power that regulators, ports, and local residents increasingly demand. With ABB’s proven technology, Paglia Orba, Jean Nicoli, and Pascal Paoli will be emissions-free when berthed in Marseille." Based on estimates, the ferries are expected to consume between 7MWh and 11MWh of zero-emission power with each port call, marking a substantial reduction in both emissions and noise pollution in the busy port area.
Corsica Linea Commences EUR 4.15 Million Upgrades on PASCAL PAOLI
Corsica Linea has initiated a significant investment of EUR 4.15 million for substantial renovations on its 2003-built vessel, the PASCAL PAOLI. This upgrade is taking place during the ship's drydocking at the Marseille facility, enhancing the vessel's operational efficiency and ensuring compliance with modern maritime standards.
Ferry Disruption in Bastia Due to Union Protest
On February 11, 2015, the 'Pascal Paoli' ferry, operated by Maritima Ferries (previously SNCM), faced an unexpected blockade at the Bastia port. This action was initiated by members of the Union of Corsican Workers (STC) as they demanded definitive answers from the works committee and sought a meeting with the Territorial Community of Corsica (CTC). The ferry, scheduled for its regular service back to Marseille and Bastia on February 12, was effectively halted for two hours due to the protest, which involved around 100 STC members blocking traffic at the port. Fortunately, the blockade concluded peacefully later in the day, allowing operations to resume.
