Emergency Airlift from Pascoal Atlantico in Grand Banks
In a dramatic rescue operation on June 30, 2015, a 21-year-old crew member of the fishing trawler 'Pascoal Atlantico' was airlifted to a hospital in St. John's after falling seriously ill. The vessel was located approximately 540 kilometers east of St. John's, just within the effective range of a Cormorant helicopter. Responding promptly to a physician's advice, a Gander-based Cormorant helicopter was deployed to the Grand Banks. Pilots successfully hoisted the ailing crew member aboard the aircraft, aided by a Hercules plane from Nova Scotia that provided vital support. The helicopter and its patient arrived at St. John's International Airport around 8 p.m. to transfer the sick crew member to the Health Sciences Centre for urgent medical attention. Additionally, the CCGS 'Cape Roger' played a crucial role in the rescue efforts, highlighting the collaborative response in maritime emergencies.
