On May 3, 2017, rough weather conditions, marked by fierce winds and heavy rain, led to the sinking of the feed barge 'Australis XXII,' owned by Australis Seafoods, in the Errázuriz Channel of Aysén, Chile. The dramatic incident unfolded as wind gusts reached between 30 and 40 knots per hour, prompting an urgent response. The eight crew members aboard the barge were successfully rescued without injury by the wellboat 'Patagon VIII,' which arrived on the scene within hours. 'Australis XXII,' valued at approximately $750,000, was equipped with essential components like feed systems, generators, a control room, and living quarters. Following the incident, concerns arose regarding the potential leakage of oil and diesel from the submerged vessel. Concurrently, another feed barge in the vicinity was reported to be facing an emergency, as water was flooding in due to storm damage; however, the situation was stabilized with the deployment of an emergency pump.
