Main Engine Failure Affects 'Peak Bilbao' Off Scotland

Sep 16, 2019 10:53

On September 14, 2019, at 10 p.m., the 'Peak Bilbao', while navigating from Hamburg to Buckie, encountered a significant main engine failure leading to a complete loss of propulsion. The incident occurred at coordinates 56° 12.85' N, 002° 43.07' E. Thankfully, the crew managed to restart the engine just before 11 p.m., at 10:50 p.m. Following the restoration of propulsion, the vessel adjusted its course towards Aberdeen for the necessary parts replacement and repairs. The 'Peak Bilbao' subsequently docked at Aberdeen anchorage at 10:15 a.m. on September 16, arriving at position 57° 10.82' N, 002° 0.37' W.

Freighter 'Peak Bilbao' Disabled in English Channel Amid Stormy Seas

Feb 07, 2019 20:35

On February 7, 2019, at approximately 7 a.m., the CROSS Jobourg responded to an urgent distress call from the freighter 'Peak Bilbao'. The vessel experienced a critical total blackout caused by water ingress on the bridge, which occurred when violent waves smashed the starboard windows, damaging essential electrical installations including communication systems and propulsion capabilities. The only working device on board was a handheld VHF radio. At the time of the incident, 'Peak Bilbao' was navigating from Rotterdam to Bilbao and was located about eight miles west of the Casquets traffic separation scheme, specifically at coordinates 49°53′22″N, 003°04′19″W, approximately 30 miles southeast of Salcombe. The Solent Coast Guard took charge of the response efforts, coordinating with the Cherbourg Marine Operations Center, which promptly dispatched the emergency tug 'Abeille Liberté' to assist. The tug arrived on the scene at 10:45 a.m. After discussions with the shipowner, a towing contract was secured, and the 'Abeille Liberté' began towing the impaired cargo ship. The CROSS Jobourg continued to oversee the situation, ensuring communications with British Coast Guards were maintained throughout. By noon, the vessels began their journey towards the port of Cherbourg, where 'Peak Bilbao' docked around 10 p.m. and received further assistance from the port tug 'Cherbourg 1' (IMO: 9793088). Subsequently, on March 18 at 7:40 a.m., 'Peak Bilbao' departed Cherbourg under tow by the tug 'En Avant 1' (IMO: 9342102), heading back to Rotterdam, with an estimated arrival time of March 20. The freighter set sail again on March 21 at 7 p.m., still accompanied by 'En Avant 1', and made its way to Szczecin, arriving on March 27, where it received additional support from the tug 'Euros' (IMO: 7041546). After repairs, 'Peak Bilbao' resumed operations on June 1, heading to Swinoujscie, where it docked on May 2 at 1 a.m., before continuing to Riga on June 7 at 11 a.m. For more details, you can view the official reports and photos: [CROSS Jobourg Press Release](https://www.premar-manche.gouv.fr/communiques-presse/remorquage-du-cargo-peak-bilbao) and [La Manche Libre](https://www.lamanchelibre.fr/actualite-661881-l-abeille-liberte-reprend-du-service).
