Life-Saving Mission of AMS Pegasus: A Harrowing Mediterranean Rescue

Sep 17, 2014 11:25

On September 11, 2014, the "AMS Pegasus 1" undertook a heroic rescue operation, saving 387 migrants who were stranded on a disabled lumber ship in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Sicily. The Italian Coast Guard had called upon the vessel to assist a small lumber carrier accommodating 385 individuals from diverse backgrounds, including 177 Egyptians, 129 Syrians, 45 Somalis, and 16 Palestinians. As the ship's crew provided these individuals with essential food and hydration, medical assistance was also rendered to several patients in dire need. The lumber ship's rescue came at a critical moment; it was on the brink of sinking, with supplies nearly depleted. The following day, September 12, brought another emergency when the "AMS Pegasus" spotted two individuals in the water near Malta. In response, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) was alerted, prompting nearby merchant vessels to search for more potential survivors. A robust search operation was initiated, employing a Maritime Patrol Aircraft from the Armed Forces of Malta as well as aircraft from the Italian Coast Guard and Navy. Ultimately, 11 migrants were rescued, which included three individuals who were airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital by the evening of September 14. Reports from survivors indicated that chaos had ensued aboard the smaller vessel, which was reportedly taking on water. Attempts by those on the smaller boat to signal the larger lumber ship turned tragic as the smugglers intentionally rammed the smaller vessel, leading to both boats sinking. Tragically, it is believed that at least 800 migrants drowned in five grave incidents, with around 500 individuals perishing when their boat was deliberately sunk by the smugglers. Italian authorities, particularly prosecutors in Catania, have launched a homicide investigation following accounts from two Palestinian survivors who were brought to safety in Pozzallo by the "AMS Pegasus." These survivors are among the few known to have lived through this devastating event. A heart-wrenching journey had begun on September 6, when a group of 500 migrants—comprised of Palestinians, Syrians, and Sudanese—were held in a warehouse prior to their departure from Damietta, Egypt. They boarded a 15 to 18-meter-long boat, with conditions so cramped that around 300 individuals were forced below deck while about 200, including up to 100 children, were left on top. During the crossing, the situation grew dire as smugglers pushed the migrants onto an even less seaworthy vessel. When many refused to switch, the smugglers retaliated violently by using the tow-boat to collide with the smaller craft, resulting in a catastrophic sinking. The swift action of the sea claimed the lives of those trapped below, while others floundered in the water, struggling to survive. Just a few survived after clinging to a life buoy for a grueling day and a half. The aftermath left a haunting toll; of approximately ten survivors, two Palestinians were transported to Italy for treatment, while others were taken to Malta. Tragically, a two-year-old Syrian girl remained in critical condition as the international community mourned the loss of lives in this horrific maritime disaster.
