Coast Guard and Air Force Rescue Burnt Fishermen from K. Coral
On June 21, the U.S. Coast Guard, alongside the U.S. Air Force, launched a rescue operation for two injured fishermen aboard the bulk carrier 'K. Coral,' located approximately 500 miles southeast of Bermuda. The critical response was initiated at around 7:45 a.m. after the 5th District Command Center in Portsmouth received a distress call about the crew of the Taiwanese fishing vessel 'Wenshun 112,' which had caught fire earlier that day. Miraculously, the 'K. Coral' managed to rescue 17 fishermen from the burning vessel before embarking on a six-hour search for the remaining two crew members. By 6 a.m., they located the missing fishermen clinging to wreckage in the vast ocean. Realizing the severity of their injuries, which included significant burns, a Coast Guard flight surgeon advised immediate medical intervention beyond the capabilities of the 'K. Coral's' crew. The Air Force's HC-130J Combat King II from Moody Air Force Base in Georgia arrived on the scene around 2 p.m., deploying seven pararescuemen from the 347th Rescue Group to provide urgent medical care. Their expertise was vital in addressing the severe injuries sustained by the two fishermen. Following the rescue, the 19 survivors from the 'Wenshun 112' were set to reach Bermuda by June 24, where they would receive comprehensive evaluations and treatment from medical professionals. Additionally, cargo vessels 'Cherry Point' and 'Jean LD' aided in the search for the missing fishermen after the Coast Guard broadcast a call for assistance to all nearby ships. This heroic operation underscores the commitment of U.S. Coast Guard and Air Force personnel in saving lives at sea.
