TOTE Maritime's LNG Vessel Perla Del Caribe Safely Reaches Puerto Rico, Navigates Hurricane Matthew

Oct 09, 2016 12:46

TOTE Maritime has successfully dispatched its newly built LNG-powered container ship, Perla Del Caribe, to Puerto Rico, safely avoiding the perils of Hurricane Matthew. The vessel, which is part of TOTE's dedicated service between Jacksonville, Florida, and San Juan, made its arrival in the bustling port of San Juan on Friday at approximately 3:30 p.m. EDT, as indicated by vessel tracking data. Setting sail from Jacksonville on Tuesday, the Perla Del Caribe had been scheduled to follow its usual route to San Juan. However, it seemed evident that the crew took proactive measures to steer clear of Hurricane Matthew's catastrophic path. This arrival is particularly poignant, arriving exactly one year after the tragic sinking of the El Faro, which resulted in the loss of 33 crew members. The El Faro met a similar fate while navigating from Jacksonville to San Juan, ultimately succumbing to Hurricane Joaquin. The Perla Del Caribe is one of two innovative LNG-powered Marlin-class vessels constructed by TOTE Maritime as replacements for older ships, including the ill-fated El Faro, affirming the company's commitment to modernizing its fleet with advanced and safer maritime technology. As TOTE Maritime continues to enhance its service routes with state-of-the-art vessels, the maritime community remains vigilant as it reflects on past tragedies while steering ahead with safety and innovation in mind.

Perla Del Caribe: The Second LNG-Powered Container Ship Takes to the Seas

Jan 25, 2016 09:51

General Dynamics NASSCO has proudly announced the delivery of the Perla Del Caribe, marking the launch of the world's second container ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This groundbreaking vessel was completed a remarkable two months ahead of its scheduled delivery date. The Perla Del Caribe is a sister ship to the pioneering Isla Bella, the very first LNG-powered container ship, which was also constructed by NASSCO for TOTE Maritime. Under a two-ship contract established in December 2012 with TOTE, these impressive Marlin Class container ships measure 764 feet in length and stand as the largest dry cargo vessels operating on LNG to date. This innovative green shipping technology significantly reduces emissions and enhances fuel efficiency, achieving environmental benefits equivalent to taking nearly 16,000 cars off the roads. This advancement underscores the maritime industry's commitment to sustainable practices and cleaner shipping solutions.

Perla Del Caribe Achieves Milestone with LNG Bunkering

Dec 18, 2015 10:21

On December 11, General Dynamics NASSCO marked a significant milestone by successfully bunkering liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the Perla Del Caribe, now recognized as the world's second containership to utilize LNG as its fuel source. The intricate bunkering process, which spanned 48 hours at the NASSCO shipyard in San Diego, was facilitated by Clean Energy, alongside industry partners Baker Hughes and Envent. In preparation for this pioneering event, NASSCO engaged in a collaborative effort with various regulatory bodies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, the American Bureau of Shipping, the San Diego Fire Department, and the Air Pollution Control District. The Perla Del Caribe received an impressive 210,000 gallons of LNG, nearly double the quantity that was bunkered for its sister vessel, the Isla Bella, the first-ever LNG-powered containership. The Isla Bella was also constructed by NASSCO and was delivered earlier in October this year. This advancement in LNG technology signifies a step forward in eco-friendly maritime operations.
