Emergency Medevac Operation Off Richards Bay for Injured Crew Member

Aug 07, 2017 11:11

On August 5, 2017, the NSRI Richards Bay team, alongside the NSRI Air Sea Rescue (ASR), sprang into action following an urgent call from the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA). A crew member aboard the gas carrier "PGC Strident Force," which was en route from the Suez Canal to Richards Bay, had sustained a serious lower back injury and required immediate medical evacuation approximately four miles southwest of Richards Bay. The TNPA helicopter was promptly dispatched to handle the emergency, while the NSRI Richards Bay crew remained on standby. The rescue operation commenced with the TNPA flight crew, including Pilot in Command Iefan Blake, Co-Pilot Lourens Goosen, and Hoist Operator Le Roux Janse van Vuuren, along with Meditrax rescue paramedic Richard Schouten and NSRI ASR rescue swimmer Kim Germishuys, reaching the stranded vessel. Upon arrival, the paramedic and rescue swimmer were hoisted from the helicopter onto the ship's deck, where they were met by the ship's crew and led to the injured sailor. The casualty, a 47-year-old Filipino national, was assessed by the paramedic and placed securely in a specialized hoisting stretcher, ensuring his stability during transport. After successful extraction, he was airlifted back to the helicopter and subsequently transported to the base, where he was handed over to a Meditrax ambulance. This crucial medevac operation concluded at 3:53 PM, highlighting the swift response and coordination among emergency services to ensure the safety and health of maritime personnel.
