Cruise Ship Insignia Rescues Migrants in Canary Islands Tragedy
In a dramatic rescue operation on June 21, 2024, the cruise ship Insignia docked at Santa Cruz de Tenerife early in the morning, bringing with it 67 rescued migrants and the unfortunate remains of six individuals who did not survive their perilous journey across the Canary Islands in a cayuco. Amongst the rescued were 61 men, three women, and three minors, all hailing from sub-Saharan countries. On-site, a comprehensive health support system was established, consisting of personnel from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), Primary Care, and volunteer members from the Red Cross, along with reinforcement from the National Police and Civil Guard. Four medical tents were swiftly set up to provide care for the survivors. Five individuals were urgently transferred to various health facilities, with one person in serious condition transported to the Ntra. Sra. de Candelaria University Hospital, while others were reported in stable yet moderate and mild conditions. The Insignia, en route from Gambia to Tenerife, encountered the cayuco on June 20 at approximately 12:30 a.m., discovering five deceased and 68 survivors on board. Initially, it was the Philipp Oldendorff, sailing from A Coruña to Ponto Ubu, that spotted the drifting canoe about 440 nautical miles south of Tenerife and extended first aid to those affected. Adverse weather conditions delayed the recovery of two additional deceased individuals that remained in the water. After the Insignia reported a rescued person in critical condition requiring immediate medevac, the Helimer 201 SAR helicopter was dispatched; however, upon arrival, the onboard physician confirmed the tragic news of another death. Consequently, the helicopter returned to Tenerife South Airport. Maritime Rescue Services initiated a thorough headcount of the rescued individuals from the Insignia and deployed the guard ship Urania for potential support. The Urania quickly navigated to locate the cayuco, which was aided by a searchlight provided by the cruise ship. Despite challenging weather conditions, the Tenerife Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) managed the operation under the authority of the Tenerife Maritime Captaincy.
