Extraordinary Rescue at Sea: Coast Guard and Polar Mexico Save Sailor in Distress
On February 22, 2026, a remarkable rescue operation unfolded approximately 35 nautical miles off Cape Canaveral when the U.S. Coast Guard teamed up with the container ship 'Polar Mexico' to save a solitary sailor aboard the disabled 34-foot sailing vessel 'Spiritus'. The incident began when the cruise ship 'Carnival Elation' (IMO: 9118721) alerted the Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville command center via VHF-FM channel 16, reporting the distressing situation. With only one person aboard the 'Spiritus', the sailor was in dire need of assistance after losing vessel propulsion. Responding promptly, the Coast Guard immediately dispatched a rescue boat from Station Port Canaveral to the reported location. However, despite the efforts, the initial search did not yield any sight of the 'Spiritus'. In a coordinated effort, the command center then launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from the Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater and an HC-144 aircraft from Air Station Miami to expand the search radius. Fortunately, the vigilant crew of the HC-144 spotted the struggling yacht and quickly established communication with the sailor. He conveyed alarming news β his vessel was taking on water and dangerously listing. In an impressive display of teamwork, the HC-144 aircraft directed the nearby 'Polar Mexico' towards the scene. The container ship's crew successfully rescued the sailor, bringing him aboard safely and without reported injuries. This event highlights the unwavering dedication of the Coast Guard and maritime partners in ensuring the safety of all who navigate the seas.
