Smouldering Incident Aboard Polar Girl in Harstad

Feb 19, 2020 11:47

On February 18, 2020, at approximately 8 p.m., a smouldering fire was detected on the Polar Girl while it was stationed in a yard at Hamek in Harstad, Havøysund. The fire was situated between the hull and cladding of the vessel, presenting unique challenges for the crew as there were no visible flames or smoke to assist in identifying the source. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and there was minimal risk of the fire spreading. At the time, two crew members were on board and reported to be in good health. In response to the situation, smoke divers from the Måsøy fire rescue team were promptly dispatched to the vessel. Their efforts were successful, and the fire was extinguished shortly thereafter, with the source determined to be localized around an electrical installation. Notably, the Polar Girl had been docked for routine maintenance since February 3, 2020, prior to the incident. For further details, a report with photos can be found at NRK's website.
