On September 28, 2016, Arctech Helsinki Shipyard proudly announced the delivery of the Polaris, a groundbreaking addition to the Finnish icebreaker fleet, to the Finnish Transport Agency. Subsequently, the Finnish Transport Agency transferred ownership to Arctia Icebreaking Oy. This prototype icebreaker, constructed at the Helsinki Shipyard, is engineered for a remarkable operational lifespan of at least 50 years, engaging in critical tasks such as icebreaking, oil spill recovery, and maritime rescue missions. Notably, the Polaris is the first icebreaker of its kind to be built in Finland since 1994, marking a significant advancement in the nation's shipbuilding capabilities. Its hull design and propulsion configuration incorporate cutting-edge innovations, allowing the vessel to operate on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and low sulfur diesel oil, positioning it as a leader in eco-friendly maritime solutions. Meeting the stringent IMO Tier III emission regulations, along with specific requirements for sulfur emissions in the Baltic Sea, the Polaris reflects a commitment to environmental responsibility. The icebreaker is outfitted with three Azipod propulsion units, each capable of rotating 360 degrees, significantly enhancing its maneuverability.
