Coast Guard Coordinates Lifesaving Medevac from 'Port Kyushu' Off Humboldt Bay

Oct 11, 2024 16:50

On October 9, 2024, a joint rescue operation was mounted by the US Coast Guard alongside the U.S. Air National Guard's 129th Rescue Wing and the U.S. Air Force's 563rd Rescue Group to medevac a crew member aboard the 'Port Kyushu', located approximately 1,000 miles west of Humboldt Bay, California. The mission was initiated after the captain notified the Coast Guard's Eleventh District Command Center at 2:30 p.m. on October 8, reporting that a crew member was exhibiting symptoms akin to a stroke. In response, watchstanders immediately issued Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) alerts to identify any vessels in the vicinity that could assist. However, no ships within a 200-mile radius were available to respond. Consequently, assistance was requested from the 129th Rescue Wing, based at Moffett Air National Guard Base in California. Two HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters and one HC-130 Hercules aircraft were dispatched to the scene. Additionally, the 563rd Rescue Group, stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona, contributed one HC-130 Super Hercules aircraft for the mission. The ANG aircraft arrived at the scene where a pararescueman successfully hoisted the patient from the vessel around 4 p.m. Following the rescue, the injured mariner was flown to Stanford Medical Center in Stanford, California, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
