LNG Tanker 'Excel' Faces Multiple Technical Challenges During Voyage

May 04, 2015 09:39

On May 1, 2015, the US Coast Guard monitored the repair processes of the LNG tanker 'Excel' in Homer, Alaska, after the vessel encountered significant technical difficulties. The Coast Guard Sector Anchorage issued a directive for the 'Excel' to remain anchored in Kachemak Bay following a propulsion failure attributed to a malfunctioning engineering gasket while the ship was approaching Cook Inlet on April 27. Coast Guard inspectors from the Marine Safety Detachment Homer conducted a thorough Port State Control annual examination on April 28, confirming that the engineering gasket had been successfully replaced. As the 'Excel' prepared to resume its journey on April 29, it faced another setback due to an automated engineering casualty, prompting the cancellation of its voyage until a Bureau Veritas (BV) classification surveyor could assess the situation. Upon arrival, the surveyor instructed the crew to test the automated engineering system and determined that the casualty was caused by a faulty engine order telegraph. Following this discovery, Coast Guard Sector Anchorage reiterated its order for the vessel to remain in Kachemak Bay. Finally, on May 1, after implementing additional safety protocols, the 'Excel' was cleared to continue its journey to the ConocoPhillips LNG plant in Nikiski. To ensure a safe passage, the tug 'Stellar Wind' escorted the vessel from Kachemak Bay, while the tug 'Glacier Wind' stood by in Nikiski to facilitate docking operations. The 'Excel' successfully completed its voyage and docked at the ConocoPhillips pier in Nikiski around noon. Subsequently, permanent repairs were conducted and confirmed by both the Bureau Veritas class surveyor and Coast Guard inspectors, marking the conclusion of this intense repair and inspection saga.
