The Transportation Safety Board has released a report confirming that inadequate maintenance led to a significant fire in the engine room of the 'Mol Prestige' on January 31, 2018, while the vessel was navigating near Haida Gwaii. The incident left five out of the 22 crew members on board with serious injuries. According to the report, the fire ignited when cold fuel oil was introduced into a tank that was already at a high temperature, resulting in oil spewing from the tank and catching fire. The investigation highlighted failures in maintenance protocols within the engine room; despite the engine crew recognizing potential hazards, these were not acted upon. In addition to the fire's cause, the report brought to light several other safety concerns, particularly regarding evacuation procedures from the engine room, where some crew members found themselves trapped as the fire escalated. In response to this incident, the vessel's owner has undertaken a comprehensive revision of their inspection and maintenance systems to prevent future occurrences.

On February 11, the cargo ship MOL Prestige safely arrived at the Port of Seattle, aided by the US-flagged tug Denise Foss. This successful docking comes after a period of uncertainty regarding the vessel's condition. While the exact extent of any damages is still unconfirmed, an investigation is set to commence to assess whether the entire cargo will need to be discharged. Notably, the MOL Prestige is currently operating on emergency backup power, highlighting the urgency of evaluating the situation.

On February 5, the bulk carrier MOL Prestige was situated approximately 207 miles southwest of Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, at coordinates 51° 58' 55.38" N and 136° 26' 22.38" W. The vessel was proceeding towards Vancouver at a speed of 4.3 knots, with an anticipated arrival date of February 9. Currently, the assessment of damage within the engine room is ongoing, with further evaluations to determine the impact on the vessel's operational capacity.
