Storm Causes 'Heiwa Maru' Cargo Ship to Run Aground Near Okinawa
On November 30, 2021, at 6:10 PM, the cargo vessel 'Heiwa Maru' encountered severe weather conditions that led to it being beached close to the Untenbaru fishing port on the western coast of Okinawa. At the time of the incident, there were 15 crew members on board. As the ship was being forced ashore, it caused damage to nearby fish farm cages and several fishing boats in the area. The weather in Okinawa worsened dramatically, prompting the issuance of a strong wind warning with gusts reaching up to 19.8 m/sec. The Nago Coast Guard has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the grounding of the ship.
