On the morning of March 28, 2017, a maritime incident occurred in Nicaragua as the cargo ship Jan Caribe collided with the passenger vessel Capitan D on the Escondido River, located roughly 25 miles east of El Rama. The Jan Caribe was en route to El Rama from El Bluff when it struck the Capitan D, which had just set sail from El Rama towards Bluefields. A total of 40 individuals, comprising 29 passengers and 11 crew members aboard the Capitan D, were successfully rescued following the crash. Despite the severe damage to the Capitan D and the uncontrolled flooding it faced, all onboard managed to safely abandon ship, with some passengers jumping into the river and swimming to the shore. Emergency authorities were quick to respond, dispatching two rescue vessels to assist with the operation. Remarkably, there were no reported injuries from the collision.
