On October 29, 2010, the crew of four aboard the yacht 'Mitori' found themselves in peril after a colossal wave struck their vessel, causing significant damage approximately 1,000 kilometers southwest of Fiji. The 'Mitori' had departed from Fiji a week earlier, en route to Auckland, when disaster struck. The wave, estimated to be between six and seven meters high, severely ripped off the yacht's rudder. In response to the distress call made to New Zealand’s Rescue Coordination Centre, the container ship 'Pacific Independence' was promptly diverted to assist the troubled crew. For over 30 hours, the crew of the 'Mitori' worked to repair their yacht but ultimately made the difficult decision to abandon ship due to worsening conditions and the collapse of their life raft's floor amidst the heavy seas. Fortunately, the 'Pacific Independence' successfully rescued the crew members, bringing them safely back to their hometown of Auckland by November 4. Meanwhile, the 'Pacific Independence' continued its journey to Tauranga, with an expected arrival time of November 5 at 9 p.m. As for the 'Mitori', it was last reported drifting toward New Caledonia, and discussions regarding its potential salvage are still pending.
