Working Conditions Aboard the Quang-Vinh-Star

On Tuesday, authorities announced the arrest of a Vietnamese crane operator in connection with a tragic workplace incident that resulted in a worker's death in Manila on Monday. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Tong Thanh Viet, was operating the crane on the shipping vessel MV Quang Minh Star when the accident occurred. According to SPO3 Paul Dennis Javier, the investigator from the Homicide Section of the Manila Police District, the incident unfolded at approximately 10:30 a.m. as the vessel was docked along the Manila Bay breakwaters at Pier 1, South Harbor. The victim, identified as 35-year-old Carlo Salcedo, was employed as a marine surveyor with Cares Adjuster and Surveyors Incorporated when he was struck by a hatch cover lifted by the crane operated by Viet. This incident has raised concerns regarding workplace safety regulations in the maritime industry.
