Ocean Emperor Averts Crisis Near Great Barrier Reef
On July 24, 2010, the bulk carrier 'Ocean Emperor' (IMO: 9153795) found itself adrift approximately 60 nautical miles off the coast of Cairns, Australia. The vessel, which was en route from Hay Point terminal near Mackay to Japan carrying a cargo of coal, experienced a significant engine failure. Following the breakdown, the crew made attempts to restore the main engine to no avail, prompting the shipping company to swiftly dispatch engineers to the site. In response, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) issued an intervention order requiring the Greek owner of the ship to arrange for tugboat services to prevent the vessel from drifting dangerously close to the iconic Great Barrier Reef. As a precautionary measure, four tugboats were placed on standby ready to assist if necessary. Fortunately, the crew successfully restarted the engines, and a tugboat from Cairns was on hand to escort the 'Ocean Emperor' beyond Australia’s economic zone, averting a potential environmental disaster.
