Turkish Captain Rescued After 66 Hours Adrift in the Java Sea
In a dramatic maritime rescue, Turkish Captain Erhan Seçkal, 40, was found alive after spending 66 grueling hours in the Java Sea. The incident occurred on May 2, 2022, when Captain Seçkal fell overboard from the bulk carrier 'Quorn' during its journey from Port Hedland to Dung Quat, just north of Bali. Upon discovering the captain's absence, the crew embarked on an immediate search of the 958-foot vessel, scouring both his cabin and public areas with no success. Suspecting he had gone overboard, they reported the situation to rescue services and initiated efforts to locate him. Lifebuoys were tossed into the water as the ship searched an area roughly 30 miles north of Bali, while Indonesian rescue teams mobilized to assist and informed nearby vessels. Communication with Captain Seçkal’s wife revealed that the last contact she had with him was a text message sent early on the same day of the incident. Without any signs of the captain, the 'Quorn' resumed its voyage, hopeful yet concerned. Fortuitously, after two and a half days adrift, a local fishing boat discovered Captain Seçkal clinging to a piece of wood. The crew rescued him and transported him back to port, where medical professionals provided treatment before releasing him. In a bewildering twist, Captain Seçkal reported to authorities that he had no recollection of falling overboard. He mentioned that he was inspecting the stern of the ship and his next memory was finding himself floating in the open ocean. Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of the crew, local fishermen, and rescue services, a potentially tragic story concluded with a successful rescue. Zodiac Maritime, the company operating the vessel, is covering the captain’s expenses and arranging a flight back to Turkey.
