CMA CGM, a prominent player in the global shipping industry, proudly announced that the CMA CGM RACINE has made history by being the first vessel to transit through the newly opened East Port Said side channel. This milestone event took place during an inauguration ceremony on February 24th, where notable dignitaries were in attendance, including Chérif Ismaïl, the Prime Minister of Egypt, Saad El-Giuchy, the Minister of Transport, and Admiral Mohab Mamish, the Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority. The introduction of this new channel significantly enhances navigational capabilities, providing vessels with 24-hour access to East Port Said, an improvement from the previous 8-hour access. This development offers vastly increased flexibility in berthing windows and reduces restrictions linked to the Suez Canal convoy for ships heading directly to the Mediterranean Sea or seeking to dock at East Port Said. The channel project was officially concluded in November 2015 and was executed within a few months. Spanning 9 kilometers in length, with a width of 250 meters and a depth of 18 meters, the new channel is capable of accommodating vessels with a draft of up to 16.6 meters.
