On August 9, 2022, the cargo vessel 'Ocean Lion' departed from Chornomorsk, marking a significant event as it journeyed towards Incheon via Singapore. This ship represents the 12th to navigate through the humanitarian maritime corridor established for grain shipments from Ukraine since a vital agreement aimed at restoring trade operations in the Black Sea. Loaded with 65,000 metric tonnes of feed-grade corn, this shipment was orchestrated by Viterra for KFA Incheon before the onset of Russia’s invasion. Currently, the vessel is in the process of loading 66,000 metric tonnes of food-grade corn, a task that was halted in the aftermath of the invasion. However, shipment quality remains a concern; the corn has faced prolonged exposure without adequate ventilation and is at risk of rejection due to potential aflatoxin contamination. South Korean regulations stipulate that corn with aflatoxin levels exceeding 20 ppb cannot be utilized for feed production, emphasizing the importance of maintaining quality during this critical time for Ukraine’s agricultural sector.
